Saudi Arabia is hoping that the debut of what is said to be the world's largest clock in Islam's holiest city of Mecca will help establish the city as an alternative time standard to the Greenwich meridian.

The new four-faced clock, which looms over Mecca's Grand Mosque and is perched atop what is expected to be the world's second tallest building when completed, is to enter a three-month trial period this week -- the first week of the holy month of Ramadan.

Situated in the heart of the massive Abraj al-Bait complex -- comprising hotels, shopping malls and conference centers -- the clock will run on Arabia Standard Time, three hours ahead of the Universal Time standard. Each of the clock's four faces are 151 feet in diameter and will be illuminated by 2 million LED lights, along with huge Arabic script reading: "In the Name of Allah." Another 21,000 white and green colored lights, fitted at the top of the clock, will flash to as far as 19 miles to signal Islam's five-times daily prayers.

The clock reflects a goal to replace the 126-year-old Universal Time standard, also known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is seen as "colonial" by some Muslims. "Putting Mecca time in the face of GMT -- this is the goal," Mohammed al-Arkubi, manager of one of the hotels in the complex, told The Telegraph.

With the global population of Muslims growing at a rapid rate, the building project is part of the Saudi government's plan to enable Mecca to accommodate as many as 10 million pilgrims each year. And for Mecca residents, the plan already seems to be successful.

"Before, we heard and saw famous clocks in the West," Ahmed Harleem, an Egyptian living in Mecca, told AFP. "But today, we can as Muslims be proud of this giant project ... it means an honor for a place, and time for me."

Golden Yellow Lobster

It's not made of gold, but a yellow lobster pulled from Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay is very rare.

Lobsterman Denny Ingram says he found the lobster in one of his pots the bay's East Passage last week. It is golden on the top and bright yellow on both sides.

Experts say the genetic feature is very rare, occurring in about 1 in 30 million lobsters.

It's also apparently good luck for this lobster, who will not be heading to anyone's dinner table.

Ingram says he plans to keep the yellow lobster on display at the fishermen's co-op at the State Pier in Newport.

That honor goes to the Capital Gate building in Abu Dhabi, which was recently certified as being the furthest-leaning tower in the world by the Guinness Book of Records. The building leans at 18 degrees, which is nearly five times that of the Tower of Pisa.

However, unlike the Tower of Pisa, the Capital Gate was built to lean. After the 12th floor the floor plates are staggered to achieve the 18 degree lean.

A company in Panama is hoping to join in a small niche market of the fruit export business: square watermelons. The Panama Fruit Producer company has started "rounding up" the square fruit, sending its first shipment of 120 boxy melons to New York.

The first square watermelons are thought to have been produced by a Japanese farmer and have been sold in some markets in Japan for years. Diaz said the only square watermelon production in the Americas he knows about is in Brazil and California in the U.S.

Singapore's $5.94 billion Marina Bay Sands casino opens

Singapore threw open the doors of its second casino on Tuesday as part of a $US5.5 billion ($A5.9 billion) complex built by US gaming giant Las Vegas Sands.

The $US5.5 billion casino-resort is the world's second most expensive casino after MGM Mirage's CityCenter in Las Vegas and is expected to generate as much $US1 billion in annual profit.

Its first casino, the $US4.4 billion Resorts World Sentosa, opened for business on February 14.

Singapore, with its two mega casinos, is unlikely to overtake Macau but may steal some "high-rollers" from China as operators shift premium business to the city-state where they face an effective tax rate of 12 per cent compared with about 39 per cent in the Chinese territory.

Neighbouring Malaysia's sole casino, run by Genting Singapore's parent Genting Bhd may also lose business to Singapore's newer and swankier casinos.

Japan's Shinkansen

The world's first high-speed rail premiered when Japan's Shinkansen opened to the public in 1964. The Shinkansen has grown to become the world's busiest high-speed rail line, carrying 151 million passengers between 2007 and 2008.

France' s TVG

France's high-speed rail, the TGV, debuted in 1981 with service between Paris and Lyon. Since then, the French national rail operator, SNCF, have expanded their electric train's network across France and to neighboring countries. The TGV currently holds the record for the fastest train on conventional rails, which it accomplished in 2007, reaching 356 mph.

China's Shanghai Maglev

China is home to the world's largest high-speed rail network, recently topping 2,050 miles. The Shanghai Maglev is China's fastest train measured by peak operational speed, reaching 268 mph in its short 18.7 mile trip. Maglev trains use magnetic levitation for the lift and propulsion of mass transit, as opposed to the wheels on traditional railroads.

EuroStar

Opening in 1994, the Eurostar's main service connects passengers between London, Paris and Brussels. The train travels underneath the English Channel, through the longest undersea tunnel in the world.

Germany's ICE
Germany's Intercity-Express is a high-speed rail system that connects most of Germany, as well as neighboring countries. Manufactured by Siemens, the ICE 3 has been in operation since 2000. Lighter and more powerful than its predecessors, the ICE 3 is licensed for speeds of 205 mph, though runs slower in Germany where the high-speed lines are only capable of handling up to 187 mph travel.

Spain's AVE

Spain's high-speed rail has four main lines connecting Madrid to Seville, Barcelona and Valladolid, and Cordoba to Málaga. An intense expansion of the railway is planned over the span of the next decade with the goal of joining the majority of Spain to the high-speed train network, which would make it the largest European high-speed rail.

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR)

The THSR, opening in 2007, is based on Japan's Shinkansen. The system was a massive construction effort, with over 2,000 engineers from more than 20 countries aiding 20,000 workers in completing the enterprise.

South Korea's KTX

Open for almost six years, South Korea's high-speed rail is derived from the French TGV. The Korea Train Express is operated by Korail, whose latest train, the KTX-II, is the world's fourth high-speed train to reach speeds beyond the 350 kmh mark (about 217 mph).

The American Academy of Pediatrics released a policy statement on Feb. 22, recommending the labeling and possible redesign of hot dogs to prevent choking deaths among children. Here's a look at 10 risky foods

Hot Dogs

They're much more than a tailgating staple. In a new paper, the American Academy of Pediatrics says hot dogs are also a choking hazard to children and should come with a warning label. About 17% of food-related asphyxiations in those younger than 10 are caused by hot dogs, according to a 41-state study cited in the paper.

Fugu

Served in paper-thin slices by expert chefs, fugu combines luxury with a high-stakes gamble. The intestines, ovaries and liver of fugu (or blowfish) contain a poison called tetrodotoxin, which is 1,200 times deadlier than cyanide. Ackee

In Jamaica, the ackee fruit is a mixed blessing. Though originally native to West Africa, it migrated to Jamaica in 1778 and is now the country's national fruit. If improperly eaten, though, ackee can cause what has been dubbed the Jamaican Vomiting Sickness — which, other than the self-explanatory symptoms, can lead to coma or death. Unripe ackee fruit contains a poison called hypoglycin, so preparers must be careful to wait until the fruit's protective pods turn red and open naturally.

Peanuts

Don't let Mr. Peanut's top hat and monocle fool you — beneath that gentlemanly exterior lies one deadly little nut if you're one of the roughly 1% of the population that has a peanut allergy. It's the most common cause of food-allergy deaths, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens — including spinach, lettuce, cabbage, arugula and kale — were listed as the riskiest foods of 2009, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is regulated by the FDA. The group identified 363 separate outbreaks linked to the veggies last year; 240 of those cases were linked to food from restaurants.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb, the vegetable so celebrated for its role in pastries that it's also known as the "pie plant," has a kick to it. While rhubarb has a medicinal history originating in Asia, ingesting a large amount of the leaves can cause poisoning. The CDC warns that neither cooked nor raw rhubarb leaves should be consumed, owing to the toxins (including oxalate) they contain. Stick with the stalk.

Tuna

Popular among elementary-school students and foodies alike, tuna has become one of the most widely consumed fish in the world. It also has one of the worst reputations. A well-publicized 2004 U.S. government advisory warned consumers against eating too much of the fish out of concern that the high mercury levels could damage the nervous system and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cassava

Better known to Americans as tapioca, the pudding favorite is produced from the roots of this bush-like plant. But the crop can have deadly consequences. If prepared incorrectly, the cassava plant can produce cyanide, a deadly compound when consumed.

Coffeee

Aside from the possibility of increased heart rate, trouble sleeping and discoloration of teeth, there's another a way that a cup of joe can be detrimental to your well being. Call it the burned-crotch effect or the java jump and jive, because when that hot liquid hits your lap, you'll stop at nothing to end the pain.

Mushrooms

Passengers would get into the units and set their destination. The driving unit would come by and pick their car up along with a number of others and take each person to their destination. The design minimizes the number of vehicles on the road, sharing load by bundling the cars together. While traveling may take longer, the effect of reducing taxis on the roads would speed up traffic as a whole.

The Minimodal is a taxi design concept designed specifically for the city of new york. The vehicle features a very unusual design that is small and light and uses a hybrid-power system. The two-person passenger cab is low to the ground and features side windows and a fully open skylight. The driver sits in front of an all glass front end and on top of the hybrid engine. The car would also have a signaling system that would let other drivers know when a passenger was coming out to avoid collisions. The designers at hybrid product design also envisioned two larger versions of the taxi to accommodate more passengers. The Maximodal would seat 3 and a wheelchair and the Mogulmodal would seat four plus a wheelchair.

This isn't your grandmother's rocking. Novague's rocking chair would contain a dyanmo within that could convert the mechanic energy produced by your rocking on the chair to power its LED reading lamp.

Named after Morpheus, the ancient Greek god of sleep, the Morfeo sofa-bed has bendable Shrek-like reading lamp "ears" on either side.

This sofa doubles as a sitting device and a thought-portrait. Designers Lucas Maassen and Dries Verbruggen build the customized sofa by capturing just seconds of brain activity through EEG, then using the "brain waves" to carve your mental map into a block of foam.

The Obelisk is a tower of stackable lawn furniture. It can be four chairs and a table -- or a giant sculptural pod.

The design concept for "Untitled Chair" features 100 gas shock absorbers that allow the piece of furniture to respond to pressure and adjust its shape around a human's form.

The Breathing Chair, inspired by plant cells, looks like a big block of tofu. The designer carefully calculated the size and location of the triangular voids in the chair to ensure that they could bend and flex around pressure. The block compresses into a chair-like shape when a person sits down.

The Robotic Chair can self-destruct, then put itself back together again. With a "brain" in its seat controlling its movement, the chair can collapse into a heap, then gradually stabilize itself, finding its footing, and piecing its legs back together again.

The ultimate chair for music lovers and people who always have to be plugged in. The Sonic Chair has a silver arm that can hold a computer or iPod, or even be attached to a computer monitor. Speakers inside the pod ensure the ultimate music-listening experience.

COSTING more than £180million, it is the most expensive film ever. Avatar, created by Titanic director JAMES CAMERON the lavish 3D sci-fi flick is not released until December 18 but is already being hailed as the film that will change the future of cinema. The Internet is buzzed with the topic on Avatar (not the Avatar AirBender) including the photo, poster, video clips, teasers and trailers.

Of course, the film is making a buzz because of this technology, but Cameron is keen to stress that film, as ever, is about story, and the aim is not to bamboozle and distract viewers with special effects.

It's not the first time cinema has flirted with 3D - Alfred Hitchcock even experimented with the technology when he filmed Dial M for Murder in the 1950s.

But the results have often been derided, either for hokey effects or poor stories, with Spy Kids 3D and Journey to the Centre of the Earth both getting a lukewarm reception.

The Avatar storyline

It focuses on Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, who took one of the lead roles in this summer's Terminator 4, on Cameron's recommendation.

Jake is a former Marine who is confined to a wheelchair following a war on Earth. He is selected to take part in the Avatar program - where his mind will control a healthy body on a remote world - and sent to Pandora, a rainforest-covered moon with a mix of beautiful and terrifying creatures, known as the Na'vi.

These are sentient, humanoid beings, considered primitive by humans - but this turns out to be a grave misjudgment once humans decide to savagely claim the world as their own.

Meanwhile, Jake has to decide where his allegiances lie in a battle which will decide the fate of the two planets.

The creature above looks to be some sort of strange mix between Predator and Tron.

Ever see a river crossing on top of another river? There is no such thing unless it is man-made. Below is the Water Bridge in Germany. Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is engineering!

This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany, as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration.

To those who appreciate engineering projects, here's a puzzle for you armchair engineers and physicists. Did that bridge have to be designed to withstand the additional weight of ship and barge traffic, or just the weight of the water?

Answer:
It only needs to be designed to withstand the weight of the water! Why? A ship always displaces an amount of water that weighs the same as the ship,
regardless of how heavily a ship may be loaded.

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data. Originally, bar codes represented data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies. They also come in patterns of squares, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns within images termed 2D (2 dimensional) matrix codes or symbologies. Although 2D systems use symbols other than bars, they are generally referred to as barcodes as well . Max Budack had the idea in 1880 but did not have the funds to proceed with his work.

Fast forward, on 20 October 1949 they filed a patent application for "Classifying Apparatus and Method", in which they described both the linear and bullseye printing patterns, as well as the mechanical and electronic systems needed to read the code. The patent was issued on 7 October 1952 as US Patent 2,612,994. In 1951 Woodland and Johanson moved to IBM and continually tried to interest IBM in developing the system. The company eventually commissioned a report on the idea, which concluded that it was both feasible and interesting, but that processing the resulting information would require equipment that was some time off in the future.

Snake with foot

A snake with a single clawed foot has been discovered in China, according to reports.

Dean Qiongxiu, 66, said she discovered the reptile clinging to the wall of her bedroom with its talons in the middle of the night.

"I woke up and heard a strange scratching sound. I turned on the light and saw this monster working its way along the wall using his claw," said Mrs Duan of Suining, southwest China.

Mrs Duan said she was so scared she grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to death before preserving its body in a bottle of alcohol.

The snake – 16 inches long and the thickness of a little finger – is now being studied at the Life Sciences Department at China's West Normal University in Nanchang.

Snake expert Long Shuai said: "It is truly shocking but we won't know the cause until we've conducted an autopsy."

A more common mutation among snakes is the growth of a second head, which occurs in a similar way to the formation of Siamese twins in humans.

Such animals are often caught and preserved as lucky tokens but have very little chance of surviving in the wild anyway, especially as the heads have a tendency to attack each other. ~ telegraph.co.uk

I am sure by now, you have heard that Disney has acquired Marvel. And in conjunction with that, TIME has compiled a list of Oddest Marvel Characters, who mostly as zeroes and losers. Not to mention awful looking costumes.

1. Hellcow

Powers: Vampire
First Appeared: 1975 in Giant Sized Man-Thing issue #5

One night Dracula, while traveling through the Swiss countryside, finds a cow named Bessie and drinks her blood. Bessie's owner discovers her lifeless, bitten body and buries her. Three days later, she arises from the dead and begins to roam the Earth seeking revenge on Dracula. After three hundred years of fruitless searching, Bessie travels to Cleveland. She meets Howard the Duck, whom she mistakes for Dracula. A raging, confused Bessie attacks Howard, who drives a wooden stake through her heart and puts her to rest for eternity.

2. The Asbestos Lady

Power: Fireproof clothing
First appeared: 1947 in Captain America #63

A brilliant chemist with a criminal mind, Victoria Murdock earned her moniker by creating fireproof clothing lined with asbestos for her and her henchmen to don as they robbed banks. Wielding a flamethrower, she set fires to ward off the police while the bandits made their escape. She also created asbestos bullets to puncture the defenses of her longtime nemesis, the Human Torch. However, as the hazards of longtime exposure became better known, the Asbestos Lady herself fell victim to the carcinogenic fiber. She was revealed to have cancer in 1990 and, sadly, is believed to have succumbed to the disease.

3. Lockjaw

Powers: Jaws of steel, multidimensional teleportation
First Appeared: 1965, in The Fantastic Four #45

Lockjaw's name is no coincidence; christened "the mightiest clamp on earth," his powerful mouth grabs ahold of his foes and doesn't let go. That along with his other power — transporting himself and others across great distances, even between dimensions — make him an important member of the Inhuman race. But what is Lockjaw, exactly? It's unclear if he was born a giant bulldog or is a former human mutated into canine form (he does talk, after all). Regardless, one fan site calls Lockjaw the most powerful inhabitant of the Marvel universe, as he's not restrained by the flaws and vices of other characters: "He has no real enemies, he is free to come and go as he pleases and do whatever he wants. And he enjoys life!"

4. Spider-Ham

Powers: All of Spiderman's gifts, plus a snout

First Appeared: 1983 in Marvel Tails #1

Before the Simpsons introduced the world to "Spider-Pig," there was Spider-Ham — an adorably plump anthropomorphic swine who lived on Larval Earth, along with such pun-inspired characters as the Fantastic Fur, Captain Americat, Iron Mouse and the Punfisher. Like most freakishly gifted superheroes, Spider-Ham was the product of a radioactive experiment gone horribly, hilariously awry in the basement of a mad scientist. Only this scientist, May Porker, wasn't trying to take over the world. She was attempting to revolutionize America's hair-care industry by inventing a blow dryer powered by atomic energy. Sure, it's a parody. But the ham stuck around until 1987.

5. The Great Lakes Avengers

Powers: High-pitched voice, voluntary obesity, squirrels
First Appeared: 1989 in West Coast Avengers issue #46

Bio: When Milwaukee-based Mr. Immortal — a man who couldn't be killed — realized that his self-healing properties didn't help him fight crime, he placed a classified ad in the newspaper seeking superheroes with powers that complimented his own. Surprisingly, people responded.

6. Puppet Master

Powers: Uses radioactive clay to bring his puppets to life; they then proceed to wreak havoc
First Appeared: 1962 in Fantastic Four #8

Battling the Human Torch, Invisible Girl, Mr. Fantastic and the Thing to gain control of the world is no easy task, but this villain was nothing but persistent — even once creating a puppet of himself that fell from a window to its death. Just another example of an otherwise good puppeteer corrupted by too much power, like John Cusack in Being John Malkovich, when Puppet Master got his hands on radioactive clay, he just couldn't help but use them to make his artfully crafted puppets do his evil will.

7. Howard the Duck

Place of Birth: New Stork City, Duckworld
Powers: None, unless a wry sense of humor count and a foul mouth count
First Appeared: 1973 in Adventure into Fear #19

Following a cosmic power-play gone wrong, the misanthropic mallard finds himself on Planet Earth surrounded by a bunch of "hairless apes" who happen to speak Duckworld's official language, English. After making a failed bid for the White House (a distrusting public accused him of being a short guy in a costume), he battles his arch nemesis, Dr. Bong, and his posse of evil-doers, the Band of the Bland, before killing a vampire cow. None of these perils were quite so life-threatening as his career-killing turn opposite Lea Thompson in George Lucas' notoriously bad 1986 film, Howard the Duck, which includes such cringe-inducing lines as "No duck is an island" and "No more Mr. Nice Duck."

8. Swarm

Powers: Can mentally influence the actions of bees and sometimes other insects
First Appeared: 1977 in Champions #14

The former Nazi scientist, who looted gold from European countries to fund his research, fled Germany and settled in South America. In experiments attempting to bend a swarm of bees to his control, von Meyer built a device that later malfunctioned, causing the bees to attack and kill him. But von Meyer's former consciousness and the bees' physical abilities formed into a new aggregate being — the villainous Swarm.

Powers: It can shift its surface to appear as if it had a giant face or even grow enormous tentacles.
First Appeared: 1966 in Thor #132

This planet-sized entity is somewhat difficult to define considering its strength and intelligence are incalculable, but it does have organ-like masses under its surface and the ability to move itself. Ego's plot for inter-stellar conquest saw him matched against Thor, the God of Thunder. Ego was defeated but still maintains the ability to morph into a paradise in order to lure unsuspecting travelers to their doom, or to masquerade as a barren world. Weird Room - Propeller Island City Lodge

Avcen JetPod

The Jetpod or so called VQSTOL (Very Quiet Short Take-Off and Landing) with runway distance required of 125m (410ft) for take-off and landing by using a vertical component of engine thrust. The Jetpod has over-wing engines and uses noise attenuation materials and systems to reduce engine noise by a further -18 to -22 decibels or the equivalent of a 50% reduction in jet noise. The maximum operating speed is 340 knots.

The Jetpod design has been made by AVCEN which is a small aerospace company based in London that is solely dedicated to the design and production of the Jetpod aircraft.

The JetPod was invented by Michael Robert Dacre. Unfortunately, Michael Robert Dacre died in a tragic accident when he was conducting a pilot test on the aircraft in a town in Malaysia.
